September saw the first ever ‘Women’s Big Cricket Month’, organised by the English Cricket Board (ECB) to showcase stories in the women’s game and encourage more women and girls to play, watch or attend cricket. Capel Ladies were involved in three events during the month.

The first was a home fixture against Penshurst Ladies on Saturday 5 September. Sixteen Capel ladies played two eight-a-side matches against a more experienced Penshurst side from the one played at the start of the season. It was a great day and the team enjoyed playing together again in purple after the excitement of the previous weekend’s inter club mixed softball tournament. The final score was one game to Capel and one to Penshurst.
Inspired by the success of the senior men’s game the week before, the evening of Friday 11 September presented an opportunity for the ladies have their turn at playing an inter club match. Captain Suzi Rich’s team ‘Suzi’s Supremos’ played the Vice-Captain Michelle Archer’s team ‘Archer’s Arrows’. The Supremos batted first and scored a respectable 259 runs with no wickets lost. They started the second innings well, with an historic first ever maiden over bowled by Nicole Ruegsegger, but the Arrows played brilliantly too and a combined score of 25 runs from the final batting pair of Michelle Archer and Jo Barwick led to a thrilling finish and a win for Archer’s Arrows by just 4 runs scored on the final ball of the game!

The highlight of Women’s Big Cricket Month for Capel came on Sunday 13 September, when a select team of just eight players travelled to Town Malling for the final Women’s Softball Festival of the season. Four teams took part, Capel, Mersham, Penshurst and Town Malling. The day was a resounding success and all the hard work put in by Bim and the team throughout a shorter than usual season paid off. Capel were the team to beat on the day and comfortably won each of their matches, winning the tournament overall. A special mention goes to Jo Howe, who was nominated by players from the other teams for a number of ‘Champagne moments’ in celebration of her cricketing skills.
