Captain Darren Semple won the toss at our 20th September timed match at Matfield and chose Dan Stronell and Simon Lander to open the batting. Dan hit a 4 in the 1st over, scoring a creditable 22 before he was b E Cooper C H Cooper in the 4th. Simon (11), Pieter Booyse (12) and Darren (13) slowly and steadily nudged the score to 62 in the 19th over, but the innings caught fire when Ryan Walmsley came in at No.5. Hitting 55 off 38 balls, including five 6s, it was a soaring 6 which secured his half century. Ryan fought on to the end of the innings when he returned to the boundary, n/o, having watched from his wicket as the Capel tail end didn’t so much collapse as suffer summary amputation in a 33rd over Hal Cooper hat trick. Capel finished on 143 all out in exactly 33 overs.
Wicket takers were H Cooper with 6, E Cooper 2, and Knott & Tutt 1 each.
Opener Barsley (7) was the first Matfield player to lose his wicket, b Dan c Ian Matthews, followed by Hoffman, lbw Ryan, in the 6th over when the home side’s score stood at 29. E Cooper (52) had replaced Barsley, and in his 25 overs at the wicket moved the score on to 114 when he was b Juan van Heerden, c Pieter. Overy (1) and Bowden (7) were both b Ryan. Matfield’s Captain P Danby (51) was b Josh van Heerden (one of Capel’s Junior stars) c Darren, Sargent (5) was given his marching orders b Dan c Pieter, and in the same 29th over Bell (0) didn’t ring, b Dan c Josh. Tutt was n/o without adding to the score but H Cooper (n/o 14) saw Matfield past the target with 146 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in 33.2 overs.
Dan and Ryan each took 3 wickets and Juan and Josh 1 each.
Top scoring with a typically lively 55 and taking 3 wickets, two of them clean bowled, saw Ryan carried shoulder high off the pitch as Capel’s Man of the Match.
